D17 Float Plan Page

Quite simply, by filling out a float plan it could save your life. The waters of Alaska can be remote, cold and unforgiving. If you run into a problem on your boating adventure time is of the essence. Every year searches are made for lost  or overdue boaters and unless it is known where they were planning on going, it can be difficult and sometimes too late to find them. Alaska is a huge state with more coastline than the entire lower 48, and unless rescuers have an idea of where you are and a description of the vessel to look for, quite simply they may not be able to locate you until it is too late.

The easiest way to prevent a bad situation is to fill out a float plan and leave it with someone that can call for help if you are late or overdue. Many harbors have them at their launch ramps or harbormasters office, take the time to fill one out! You can also fill one out online, then print it and leave it with a loved one, a friend or a neighbor. As long as someone has your plan you are in a much safer position for a rescue if it is needed.
