BUSTER BORHAUER MEMORIAL AWARD

WHITTIER FLOTILLA 02-04
Buster Borhauer was a member of
the Sitka Flotilla from 1964 until crossing the bar in 1969. He served
as Rear
Commodore and actively supported Auxiliary programs. The award is
presented to the
Flotilla having performed the most Search and Rescue assists during the
calendar year.

COMMODORE RODERIC S. CARPENTER MEMORIAL AWARD
Roderic S. Carpenter, Commodore
from 1979-80 was a member of the Anchorage Flotilla until he

the Flotilla with 30 or more members and one to the Flotilla with fewer
than 30
members. It is given for the highest number of VSC, PWC, UPV CFV and

Jean Gebhart, Kodiak Flotilla Commander, wife of Don
Gebhart, Seventeenth District Auxiliary Commodore in 1973-74, was a
staunch proponent
of the Public Education Program. This award is presented to the
Auxiliarist teaching the
most lead instructor volunteer Public Education hours within a calendar
year.

CAPTAIN WILLIAM S. GRISWOLD AWARD
PRESENTED TO
VIRGINIA N. THOMAS
CAPT Griswold of the U.S. Coast
Guard, served as the Seventeenth District Director of Auxiliary in the
1980s before
transferring to Washington, DC where he served as the Chief Director of
Auxiliary until
his retirement in 1993. He became a member of the Juneau Flotilla in
1985 and is still
a member of District 7. This award is presented to the Auxiliarist
performing the most
hours of Coast Guard Operational Support during the calendar year.

Fred Havens was a member of the Juneau
Flotilla from 1970 to 1982. He served as the District Seventeen
Auxiliary Commodore
in 1977-78 and as the National Rear Commodore-West in 1979-80. The award
bearing
Commodore Havens’ name is given to the Flotilla with the highest
percentage of new
program qualifications for the calendar year.

Wanda E. Jansen, a member of
the Ketchikan Flotilla from 1982 until crossing the bar in 1992, was

with fewer than 30

The Juneau Flotilla Award was originally established
in 1964 and was presented to the “Best 17th District
Inspector-Examiner”. It was converted
to an award for Member Training activity in 1984. It is now awarded to
the
Flotilla completing the highest percentage of specialty courses in the
calendar year.

Established in 1992 as the Marine
Dealer Visitor Award, and renamed the Recreational Boating Safety
Visitation Program
in 2003, this award is presented to the RBS visitor conducting the most
visits for the
calendar year.

Philis Starr Smith was a member
of the Ketchikan Flotilla from 1988 until crossing the bar in 1993.
Because of her
affinity for children and teaching youth classes, the award established

her name and is given in two parts for the most classes in the Youth
Education Program,
one award going to the Flotilla with 30 or more members and the other to
the Flotilla
with fewer than 30 members.

Larry Wheeler was a member of the Ketchikan
Flotilla from 1978 until his retirement from the Auxiliary in 1996. This
award was
established in 1997 to recognize Larry for his contributions to the
Auxiliary Operations
Program. It is presented to the District Seventeen Auxiliary Crew Member
logging the
most patrol hours on an Auxiliary Operational Facility during the
calendar year.

Howard Thew was a member of the Anchorage
Flotilla from 1971 to 1995, and was an active participant in the
Courtesy Marine
Examination program (now known as the Vessel Safety Check program).
Howard
originally proposed this award in 1980. It is given to the District
Seventeen Vessel
Examiner performing the most examinations/inspections during the
calendar year.

Richard Goshorn joined the Juneau Flotilla in
1990 and became one of the first Auxiliary Commercial Fishing Vessel
Examiners in
the nation. The CFVE award established in 1999, was renamed for him in
2000 and
is presented to the District Seventeen Commercial Fishing Vessel
Examiner
performing the highest number of Safety Examinations during the calendar
year.

PAT KENNEDY MEMORIAL AWARD
PRESENTED TO
ROGER ESTRADA / MICHAEL MORRIS
Pat Kennedy was the Assistant Director
of Auxiliary from 1980 to 1988, and a member of the Juneau Flotilla from
1982 to 1988.
Ensuring the smooth operation of AUXMIS was one of Pat’s ongoing
challenges. The
Pat Kennedy Memorial Award was originally presented to the most
deserving Flotilla
Information Systems Staff Officer. It has since been changed to be
presented to the
Flotilla Commander demonstrating outstanding leadership and management
skills
ensuring the proper administration of their respective Flotilla.

17th DISTRICT RECREATIONAL BOATING SAFETY AWARD
Established in 2004, the Recreational Boating Safety

SANDY MAZEN
The Five Star certification is an
extension
of the Uninspected Passenger Vessel Exam Program. Established in 2003
and
administered by the Seventeenth Coast Guard District Five Star manager,
this award is
presented to the Auxiliary Vessel/UPV/Five Star Examiner performing the
most Five
Star Examinations in the District for the calendar year.

PROFESSIONAL AUXILIARY COXSWAIN AWARD
PRESENTED TO
GEORGE J. EISCHENS
David T. Borg was the Operations Training Officer for
the 17th District Coast Guard Auxiliary from the summer of 2000 until
June 2004.
Through Chief Borg’s efforts new heights in operational training were
established and
implemented. This award is presented to the Auxiliary Coxswain who
demonstrates
exemplary professionalism as determined at the discretion of the
Director of Auxiliary
and Operations Training Officer.

LCDR Christopher G. Honse was
Director of Auxiliary for the 17th District Coast Guard Auxiliary from
July 1999 until
his retirement in April 2004. Chris was inventive, always looking for
new ways to
promote the Auxiliary and its programs. The award, established in 2003,
is determined
by the Director of Auxiliary and is presented to the Auxiliarist who
demonstrates
development, planning and execution of a leading edge idea.

CAPTAIN SAMUEL GUILL AWARD

MARSHALL R. (MARK) POE
Captain Samuel Guill, U.S. Coast Guard,
founded the Coast Guard Auxiliary in Alaska by establishing Juneau
Flotilla in July
1956. As the Seventeenth District’s first Director of Auxiliary, CAPT
Guill saw Flotillas
established in Sitka, Ketchikan, Anchorage and Whittier. This award is
presented to the
Coxswain performing the most ordered patrol hours with an Auxiliary
Operational
Surface Facility during the calendar year.
