Safe Boating in Alaska
Coast Guard Auxiliary to release emergency procedures sticker in multiple languages

The District 17 U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary announces the release of an Emergency Radio Procedures sticker designed to assist non-English speaking boaters in making emergency marine radio calls. The sticker, approximately 5 1/2" x 6", is available in Korean, Russian, Spanish and Tagalog as well as English.

Between 2000 and 2004, Alaskans reported 274 accidents that resulted in 92 fatalities. In at least one instance, two lives may have been saved if emergency radio procedures had been available to the non-English-speaking boaters. The stickers were produced through a grant from BoatUS Foundation.

Flotillas in Ketchikan, Sitka, Juneau, Homer, Kenai, Kodiak, Whittier, Seward, Fairbanks, Anchorage, Eagle River, Mat-Su Valley and Valdez will have a supply of the stickers by May first.
